James Parris was born in 1969 in New
York City. His leap into commercial
art began at the prestigious High
School of Art & Design in Manhattan,
where he majored in Illustration,
internalizing the principles of
design, along with drawing and
painting technique. He continued his
studies at Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn, honing his craft and
attaining a BFA in communications
design.
After freelancing for a few years as
an illustrator/storyboard artist in
New York, James was approached by
Walt Disney Feature Animation and
asked to relocate to their fledgling
east-coast facility in Orlando. As a
Disney animator, James was a
prominent artistic voice,
contributing to the box-office
triumph of 'The Lion King' in 1993,
and staying on through the
production of 'Tarzan' in 1998.
James' ultimate goal of live-action
filmmaking brought him to Los
Angeles, where he currently resides.
After brief stints at the Dreamworks
Animation studio, MTV, Duck Soup and
SimEx Digital Studios, he was
invited to join the Digital
Character team at Sony Pictures
Imageworks to help bring another
box-office smash - 'Spider-Man', to
life. As a visual effects concept
artist, James helped develop many of
the effects used in Fox's 'X-Men 2'
at Cinesite Digital Studios, as well
as creating animated effects for the
'Nightcrawler' character. At Digital
Domain, James worked under the
Direction of Alex Proyas to give
life to 3-d androids for Fox's 'I,
Robot', and his most recent work can
be seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, as
well as ‘Snakes on a Plane’.
Between projects, James keeps busy
storyboarding for commercials and
music videos, providing art
direction for independent films as
well as writing and directing his
own material.
